Workplaces are changing. The days of stuffy cubicles and strict dress codes are long gone. Employee health, happiness, and comfort are now prioritized. Companies can promote employee wellness by providing standing desks, which help counteract the dangerous consequences on health by sitting all day. FluidStance’s line of balance boards takes the standing desk craze a step further. These boards, which appear to be modern furniture, allow users to ‘float’ while using their standing desk.
Contributing A Calming Influence To The Combination
Joel Heath, founder and CEO of GoPro, is on a quest to change the world. Heath was previously responsible for creating the Games of the GoPro Mountain, an adventure competition. He came to the conclusion that standing workstations are an improvement over sitting desks, but that they still have some shortcomings. Before turning to Indiegogo to raise cash for the first batch of boards to be manufactured, Heath worked on the design of the first board for a period of eighteen months.
FluidStance has significantly increased their product range over the course of the previous two years, and they now provide three different boards: the Original, the Level, and the Plane. The decks all share the same fundamental design, which “elicits gentle, continual movement below your feet to enhance your range of motion and heart rate.” They provide fleets of 5 boards that come with a suitable storage rack as well as larger bulk orders for business customers who are looking to relocate their office.
Defend Your Wellbeing:
Even with regular exercise, research indicates that persons who frequently sit for lengthy periods have an elevated risk of premature death. In an effort to fight the sedentary aspect of office work, standing desks have become increasingly popular.
Among the benefits of standing desks are:
- Reduced likelihood of weight growth and obesity
- Lower blood sugar levels
- Improved posture
- Improved mood and energy levels
- Increased efficiency
The Mayo Clinic evaluated and granted NEAT certification to the FluidStance decks. In order to obtain NEAT certification, the board has to increase its energy expenditure by more than 10 percent compared to sitting. Utilization of the FluidStance board resulted in a 19.2% increase in energy expenditure.
The decks were also evaluated by the Heeluxe Testing Lab, a private laboratory for footwear research and innovation. When using the boards, the participants’ heart rates increased by 15% compared to when they were sitting. In addition, they had individuals do a typing exam while standing and sitting and observed no significant difference in the number of errors.
Maintaining A Modest Imprint:
Heath acknowledges the significance of being ecologically conscious and contributing to the local community. The majority of production occurs within 500 miles of the company’s headquarters in Santa Barbara, California. The boards are manufactured with eco-friendly materials like bamboo and recycled plastics, and the metal bases are manufactured with zero waste. Additionally, the company provides time, money, and ownership to First Descents, a charity that offers free adventure activities to young adults with cancer.
